How important are regular gynecologic wellness exams?

All women over age 21 should have an annual wellness exam with their gynecologist, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Seeing a gynecologist once a year for a wellness exam, including a pelvic exam, is vital in maintaining a woman’s overall health. Starting gynecological care in your early 20s will provide an important baseline exam for your doctor, and will allow your doctor to notice changes on future exams that may show a problem or an abnormality.

What can I expect during my exam?

Every patient’s wellness exam begins by taking and recording blood pressure and weight. During the exam, Dr. Lambert will feel your abdomen and perform a thorough breast exam to check for lumps and other potential signs of early-stage breast cancer. Patients also undergo a pelvic exam of their vagina, uterus, and cervix. At this time a pap smear may also be taken and the cells send to a lab for the screening of cervical cancer. Dr. Lambert also welcomes questions at this time, regarding any aspect of her patient’s health and concerns.
